Dr. Samuel Johnson
No. 17 Gough Square, described by Maccaulay as 'a house in one of th narrow and gloomy courts on th north of Fleet Street' , was for many years the home of Dr Samuel Johnson (1709-1784). In 1447, he was persuaded to undertake his Dictionary of the English Language, which took him eight ears and, while earning a fortune for the booksellers who published it, it brought him no more than 1,500 pounds. - London Lives On (1948)
